Hotel Dusk: Room 215 Review

Posted by Altered Confusion on January 29, 2009

Interested in more gaming news, then follow the link to the new site.

933043_75606_front

Hotel Dusk: Room 215, is a mystery game for the DS. The game makes you feel as if you are going through a choose your own adventure detective novel. You will play the part of Kyle Hyde, an ex-cop, who is now a salesman who is told to go to Hotel Dusk to pick up a package for your company. What you discover is that the hotel is filled with your past, and other mysteries that you’re character gets drawn into.

The graphics give me mixed feelings. When talking to characters I think the grey-scaled versions of the characters moving around while you talk look good. When moving around the hotel the 3D going on in one of the screens wants me to just focus on the 2D top down view of the map and just hope that when I get close to something to view I’ll see my indicator flash.

The music feels just right for the game, its got that mystery detective feeling to it.

The controls are adequate. You’re going to use your stylus almost exclusively to play the game. I really wish that there was a handed setting on it, seeing as I’m left handed, having to play exclusively right handed does get a bit old. There are times where using the stylus for precision taps can get a bit nerve-racking, but over all its good.

This game is a very interesting idea, and as you get deeper in the game the ability to mess up disappears. There are way too many parts that, late in the game, you’ll accidentally forget something, or choose the wrong option in a conversation, and its instant game over. There are also times in the game where you’re going to wander around for a long time because you didn’t notice a small step that is required to move the story along. If you are looking for a game that the majority of it is talking, and selections for those conversations with a detective twist, this game is for you. This is a game that even though it feels like you can blow through, you’re going to find its going to take longer than predicted, and there are spots where the story does drag. This game gets a 7.8 out of 10.

Atlus Keeps the Releases Coming

Posted by Altered Confusion on January 29, 2009

atlus

In a time where it seems that most studios just aren’t releasing as many titles because of the economy Atlus has decided to take the opposite approach and continue to release a mountain’s worth of games. My only hope is that they are like their best sellers, and less like Eternal Poison. The latest games to leak out are 3 DS games, and a PSP game slated for times during the second quarter (April through June).

Curious to know what the titles are, well here you go:

DS
Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier (now that is a mouth-full)
Sting’s Knights in the Nightmare and Dokapon Journey (No it’s not the singer Sting’s game)
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor

PSP
Crimson Gem Saga

So as you can see 4 very different titles, and probably with very little if any cross over between titles.

I almost didn’t report on this simply because I was afraid that I might lash out at one of the companies that I held in high regard, but as a writer, you just can’t let your emotions get the best of you.

So here’s to 4 games that aren’t going to be as big of a disaster as Eternal Poison. As they release dates get closer I’m sure more information on each will come available and hopefully we’ll pick up that info and be able to give it to you, the readers.

Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time gets US release date

Posted by Altered Confusion on January 26, 2009

echoesoftimeffcc

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time officially has a North American release date. Both the Wii and the DS versions of the games, that you’ll be able to play along side each other will drop for $40 on March 24. Now I know that there are those out there that remember the last try at inter-connectivity between a Nintendo console and portable device, but it looks like this time around instead of having to get all those cables, you’re going to be able connect wirelessly. Also as reported before, in the Wii version you’re going to be able to use you Mii as a character in the game. If memory serves me correctly this is the first major title in a while to show Mii support, I’m not counting the mountain of mini-game games out there, though.

So if you are a fan and are dying to get your hands onto the next Crystal Chronicles, and are in the US, your time is near. My only hope for the game is that they did away with having to carry around that bucket, I know it was an ingenious way of not having to deal with split screen, but it was a pain in the ass nonetheless.

The Latest on What is Going on

Posted by Altered Confusion on January 25, 2009

Thanks to Evil Poison, I fear that my want to play RPGs has been stopped cold in its tracks. This of course is a good thing because it will mean reviewing of more games not RPG, but its also a bad thing because that is the genre that I hold high in my heart, but after what I have just experienced I need to take a break from that genre. Ironically enough Gamefly is sending me yet another PS2 RPG, but we’ll hopefully be getting another game that isn’t one soon, so no worries.

In other news, as you can see I’m still in the driver’s seat for when it comes to posting, I know that there are some people out there that are still working to get a review to me, and there is one other that I’m trying to convince to write a review, we’ll see how it all comes together in the future.

In an effort to separate the recreational me, and the reviewing me I have decided that it is time to get a separate XBOX Live Account for myself. So if anyone is interested to see what I’m currently playing for review, just add AlterdConfusion to your buddy list. I will be making a PS3 username change as well soon, but I’ll update you on that when I get a chance.

Currently I have Hotel Dusk Room 215 running in my brand new DS Lite, it was time to semi-retire the huge red DS that I’ve been totting around for years. Right now I’m about half way through the game, so hopefully I can get a review out in the next couple of days.

I was looking at my wall o’ games, this morning, and have found quite a few games that I haven’t reviewed, they do have a good layer of dust on them, but I think, if I get a chance, I might break into those to give some of the readers, who are looking at the older games, a review to go on. As a result, I may be breaking out the Gamecube games, and the original XBOX games.

Well I better get back to it… oh by the way, I have mapped out the next 6 comics, I just need to draw them out. My mission with the comic is to push way past episode 100 or 150 by the time I get to PAX. I’m pretty sure that that goal is way within my reach, and I hope that the readers are enjoying the experience. As you may have noticed the comics are always shown small on the site as a formatting thing, but to compensate for that every comic is linked to the real sized image, that shows you what the comic should look like.

As always I love to hear from those readers out there that come to Altered Confusion, so please just drop a comment sometime. As you can see I’ve changed up the Left Bar a bit to show what the latest comments have been as well as a calendar to show you what days posts have occurred, so that if you missed a day you can go straight there instead of wading through all the posts trying to find where to start from.

Though I did this a bit ago I still want to point it out, in the Review section I have now broken down each game to system, genre, or alphabetic by title. Hopefully in the near future I’ll be implementing the scores option as well.

One last thing, Altered Confusion t-shirts are on their way, the design is really simple this time around, and when they arrive I’ll try to quickly get something posted for you, the readers.

Square-Enix to port Final Fantasy Legend II to the DS

Posted by Altered Confusion on January 15, 2009

saga1132

Square-Enix has announced that they will be releasing yet another port onto the Nintendo DS. the game they have chosen is Final Fantasy Legend II, also known in some circles as SaGa 2. This game was made its presence known on the original GameBoy.

I have to say that the games that Square-Enix has been remaking/porting as of late have been the games that truly deserve to have another moment in the sun.

There aren’t any concrete dates for the release of this game, but when there is I’ll be sure to post them.

Nintendo DSi Dated and Priced for the US

Posted by Altered Confusion on January 14, 2009

dsi

According to several sources the latest version of the Nintendo DS, dubbed the DSi, is headed stateside this April 4th. Remember that this is the DS with the dual cameras, larger screen, SD Card expansion, internal memory, and no GBA slot.

The price on this newest piece of hardware is reported to be $179.99. This is $50.00 more than the DS Lite. the reason behind this, apparently, is that Nintendo doesn’t want to effect the still high sales of the Lite.

My first opinion of this game is, what the hell, no GBA slot, didn’t Activision just release a game that requires it so that you can play guitar? I’m sure that I’m going to have to get the latest and greatest, even though I’m still totting around the first gen DS, nice, big, and blocky, with the Mario Kart theme.

Announcement: Altered Confusion

Posted by Altered Confusion on January 11, 2009

Well as everyone has probably seen, it is I, the lone man posting to the website still. After some time to reflect I have discovered that I’m totally cool with that. I know that there are some people out there that are trying to get me a review or two, and when they finish their reviews I’ll be sure to post them.

As for the site, I’m happy to say that it isn’t going anywhere, well at least its not going to disappear.I’m trying to churn through as many games as I can get my hands on be it on the DS, PC, PSP, PS2, XBOX360, PS3, Wii, or the Apple i-pod touch. I can’t really say which I’m going to be paying more attention too because of the following things.

1. I have no idea what games come out when for the Apple i-pod touch
2. I have no idea what game I’ll be able to get my hands on next
3. Because I have a 9-5 job it really depends on the amount of focus I can give said game.

As for the comic, I really wish that I had more time to get more of them out. I know that I started off strong early with a comic almost every day, then a comic once a week, and now I’m trying to get two done ever week. We’ll see how that goes, but I’m definitely set in trying to make the next milestone of 100, seeing as I have just passed 50.

I hope for all of those out there that the review, comics, or both satisfy. I am curious to hear from those who venture on to my site if they have opinions on my reviews, or questions. I try to field the comments as quickly as I can, and I’m even starting to reply to the comments left previously.

Altered Confusion is also making plans to attend the following EXPOs in the year 2009.

PAX (Penny Arcade EXPO) Sept. 4-6
AWA (Anime Weekend Atlanta) Sept. 18-20

Phantasy Star Zero Coming US and Europe

Posted by Altered Confusion on January 9, 2009

953869_113102_front

Sega has announced that their Nintendo DS entry into the hit series Phantasy Star is coming to the US and Europe. Sadly, though the wait will be slightly longer than most would like, but come the winter of 2009 it can be yours.

For those out there that don’t really know much about Phantasy Star Zero, here’s a little bit about it. The game is set in an alternate universe of Earth. A large scale war has occurred, and civilization has slowly recovered 200 years later. Around that time those brave of soul venture out from the borders of towns to battle the unknown and monsters.

You’ll be able to choose from 14 customizable character types, and will be able to adventure alone, or with friends on wireless or internet play.

This is probably a game that I’ll be waiting slightly impatiently for, but it is something that should be a pretty solid game.

Ubisoft to make Grey’s Anatomy Game

Posted by Altered Confusion on January 7, 2009

greyscover

This whole time I’ve been thinking to myself, this has to be an early April Fools joke, but it would appear that I was sadly mistaken. Ubisoft has officially announced the inking of the deal to bring the hit TV series, Grey’s Anatomy, to the Wii, DS, and the PC. Here is your chance to interact with the characters and the hospital that you’ve grown to love.

I think that this is an attempt on Ubisoft’s part to make some green on something that has a huge following. I personally have no interest in the show, nor the games, but I can see how there is a group out there that would eat this up, especially on the DS. I wonder what the system requirements for this game will be, they better make sure that an average computer can run it because if they don’t their core audience might not be able to run the game, and they’re going to see some backlash.

I’m sure more info will come out about this game, and when it does I’ll see if I can’t sneak it on for those interested in the future of this game, which amazingly enough is suppose to come out sometime this year.
