I’ve been trying to hold off on this review for a while now because every time I played I felt like I was getting opened up to new stuff. This is a game that starts off as a platformer where you will take yourself through a story mode and unlock goodies that you can then customize your starting spot with and your character. Your character is affectionately called a sackboy, but once you start getting items that you unlock by going through levels you’ll see that you can definitely reinvent  it.

The graphics look great, for a sometimes very simplistic game, and draw the player into wanting to play more. The different obstacles, levels, and items look great and fit with what the game is about. The characters that you’ll interact with are also quite unique.

The controls are the one thing that hold this game back from possibly being one of the best games ever. At some times the controls are a little sluggish in response, also there are times where you need to change depths on the screen where you’re left frustrated. Let me explain that a bit more, this game is a side scrolling platformer, but it is also 3D so there is some depth to the screen which will sometimes hide objects or secret paths, but there are times where its all about timing and sometimes the sackboy and you don’t quite go at the same speed and as a result you’re left cursing.

The gameplay, with the exception of the controls, is novel, innovative, and fun. I keep getting drawn back into this game not just because of the fun that I have while playing, but the challenge that it presents. There is also a chance that you’ll get to see amazing levels that were created by your peers. Now some of them are indeed on the edge or over for IP infringement, but I’m not going to tell anyone because those are usually the levels that are the best.

My recommendation for this game is go get it, try to get through the story mode to unlock all the goodies, then check out some of the created levels, and then get to work on one of your own. If you are willing to put in a good amount of work getting feedback from peers is so rewarding. Even with the slightly faulty controls I can’t knock this game down, its too much fun. 9.3 out of 10.

Sony Offers a bit of Clarity on LBP level issues

Posted by Altered Confusion on November 14, 2008

So Sony has finally issued some info on the disappearing LittleBigPlanet levels. It turns out that they want you to use your imagination, the sky’s the limit, you just have to follow the following rules:

# Ensure that the content you share with other users is suitable for all ages – everybody has access to your level if you publish it
# Please respect other people’s intellectual property rights. For example, don’t use images, brands or logos that you’re not entitled to use.
# If you come across any content that you feel the need to report, then please do it responsibly. Hoax reports will be considered inappropriate behavior.

So let me get this straight because people want to show off their levels of their interpretation of a game, there’s a distinct possibility that they are going to find their level gone. I understand that maybe making a level in which you have to play as Princess Peach and you have to navigate up Mario’s pipe may be a bit risque, but at the same time if you are a huge fanboy of a game and you want to pay tribute, I don’t understand. The creators, to my knowledge, aren’t getting any perks for slaving over the level creator for days and then sharing their level. Sure people will talk of it, but I don’t think there are any transactions going on. I’m not seeing anyone’s PSN wallet bulging over a level done to FF VII.

I also have this thought, if someone creates a truly original level with themes and characters are they then protected by public publishing law, or can the big boys of videogaming go, “Ah, what a brilliant idea, of course we would have thought of it on our own eventually but we’ll just use what we see”?

I am a huge supporter of allowing people to show their creativity, and to show their interpretations of their favorite things. I think that this move is a poor one. What I don’t understand is the fact that no one could imagine someone making something a little less and appropriate. As long as I’ve seen games that let you create things I’ve seen somebody try to make or draw a penis in it, so why was this such a big surprise. There should have been a rating system installed into this game and the levels regulated into age categories, but then again that would be using the rating system which has been trying for years to make people aware of what customers are getting into, but who actually listens to the ESRB (Sadly not enough people).

LittleBigPlanet User Created Levels being Deleted

Posted by Altered Confusion on November 9, 2008

Sony promises to explain more, but as of now for some crazy reason user created levels are being deleted, not removed or quarantined. As players are becoming more accustomed  to what they can do with the level editor they are creating levels inspired by their favorite games. Unfortunately those levels are seen as bad or something to that extent and as a result there are players that are being left guessing as to what happened to the level they spent hours upon hours working on.

My only word of advice is be careful what you upload for now, let’s see what happens when the moderators start speaking up. LittleBigPlanet seems to gear towards those who want to put the time in to making something awesome, but seeing what is happening right now don’t be as aggressive trying to post those levels.

LittleBigPlanet gets slightly Delayed

Posted by Altered Confusion on October 20, 2008

So the wait for the release of LittleBigPlanet just got a bit longer. According to sources it would appear that there were phrases from the Qur’an discovered in one of the game’s background music tracks. Sony has disclosed that they will be rectifying the situation immediately, and they have also issued a form of apology to all those who were offended. The new release date is only slightly moved, and it is the 27th instead of the initial 21st.

I am a bit curious as to why this was found as offensive, or why it would be such a big deal. If any reader out there has an explanation I’d love to hear it, I guess on this subject I’m just ignorant to the offense that this has caused.

Rest assure that if you’ve been dying to get your hands on this game, I don’t think one change to a music track will break the game. Then again I’m sure it has completely destroyed a game because what is a game with a lousy soundtrack? Then again that could give you the excuse to listen to some head bobbing tunes not in the game while you play, and that’s something that I can’t really complain about either.
