Sony to Execute “Welcome Back” Gesture

Posted by Altered Confusion on May 2, 2011

Well the PSN has been down for at least 2 weeks now, and it would appear that it will finally be coming back in a crippled state soon, and then fully live in about a week. Sony will of course continue to be busy on this issue, but they are rolling around ideas of what to say to those out there effected, and for those who simply still have a PlayStation 3 after the attack that caused so much information to be stolen.

Slam Bolt Scrappers Review

Posted by Altered Confusion on March 21, 2011

I got the chance to see this game in action at PAX East and I have to admit I didn’t get a chance to play it but I was intrigued. So I’ve downloaded it to the PlayStation Network and given it a spin. The best way to describe this game is a battle block building game. The object of the game is to collect blocks of the same color and make squares with them to create weapons that will attack the opponents weapons.

Posted by Altered Confusion on January 30, 2011

Dead Space 2 puts you back in the shows of everyone’s favorite engineer Isaac Clarke. You are discovered in what looks like a medical wing of sorts by someone who quickly meets his end. You’ll have to race through a couple of areas but soon you will have a familiar suit and weapon to use. You’ll find that your in a colony this time around and there seems to be plenty of people willing to help you, but to what end. Travel all over the city fighting all those creatures that you so grew to hate. Don’t be surprised if things come at you from all over the place in this very dimly lit setting.

3D Dot Game Heroes Review

Posted by Altered Confusion on January 10, 2011

Do you yearn to return to the days of 2D kingdoms where the task of saving the world was in a simply flat world? Well there is a kingdom that once was exactly that, and had a hero who saved the day. People from all over came and visited, but as time went on less and less people showed up until the day that the king of the lands made the decree that everything was to go 3D. Upon that announcement the world shook and everything from cats, dogs, people, and houses rose up and embraced the 3D world. There is a problem, however, the once evil entity that ravaged the 2D world, who is trapped inside an orb, has had his orb stolen, and there is a new great evil threatening the world. You, a decendant of the great hero that once saved the lands must rise up and conquer all that is evil, and bring peace, once again to the kingdom.

Square Enix’s Crystal Defenders going Multi-platform

Posted by Altered Confusion on January 21, 2009

The Square Enix made Crystal Defenders, that was released on to the Apple App Store is now destined to the Wii, XBOX 360, and PS3. The Wii will be showing it in the WiiWare section for 1,000 points. The 360 and PS3 will have it in their arcade area (Live Arcade and PSN respectively), though no price has been mentioned for those locations.

To my this screams yet another attempt by Square to make money solely on a name. As stated in the review this game isn’t all that original, but because it is made by Square Enix and has early Final Fantasy-esque characters that you can throw down, the masses will buy it.

I’ll be interested to see how this ends for Square Enix. I will admit half of me wants them to succeed so that they can swell their coffers a bit more so maybe a truly original IP can come out of their studios, and the other half wants them to fall flat on their face and wake up to the fact that the more they water down the name Final Fantasy in any shape or form the more they are going to start to see people rating their games as average, and a “been there and done that” game.

The game will be updated from the Apple version, but I’m thinking its just going to be a couple more boards and maybe a slightly higher res models. It is due out in Japan, at least for the Wii on January 27th.

Persona 4

Posted by Altered Confusion on January 1, 2009

Having never picked up any of the Persona series I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into, but after playing this game I can at least tell you my opinion of this PlayStation 2 RPG. You are a big city kid who has to spend time in a little country town of Inaba. There you create friendships as well as try to solve a mystery that only you and your friends can truly solve.

The music and sounds really get old after a while. At first you are so into the game that you don’t really notice that the battle music is the same, other than when you’re fighting a boss. Also the same commands are repeated over and over again in battle, most of the time resulting in someone screaming “Persona”.

The controls aren’t anything special, but they get the job done. You’ll have a chance to gain the initiative for every battle, other than boss battles, by swinging your weapon and hitting the enemy. The camera does bug me a bit, I kept getting turned around in the game going the wrong way because I thought the camera, which you control completely, left and right at least, was pointed in the opposite direction.

The graphics show you that this game is made by those who know a thing or two about anime. It has an anime tone to it that can’t be ignored. The cut scenes are sometimes in game models, and they really don’t do much for me, but there are so animated sequences, which I wish had subtitles, but they look great. I could never decide if I like the fact that the enemies outside of battle really didn’t tell you what you were going to face, or not.I will give you a helpful tip, you’ll notice that they come in all shapes and sizes, the bigger the size outside of combat the harder its going to be. The in battle designs for the monsters that you face look fantastic.

The game play is the thing that about killed me. It wasn’t until 2 hours into the game that I was actually truly able to control my character. This would have been a deal breaker for me, but for the sake of trying to find out what this game was all about I pressed on. What I discovered is that there is a ton of micromanaging in the game. You’ll have to keep to a schedule and as the game goes on you’ll have the chance to join sports clubs, intellectual clubs, go visit a library, do part time work, go investigate the mystery, hang out with your friends, and the fine nail, you have specific times that you have to do those things, as well as you have a defined time limit to research a specific part of your investigation.

I’m a huge fan of RPGs, but I have to say that after many many hours, and feeling like I was working my ass off to feel like I was just treading water, I had to put the controller down. If you are looking for a very deep and highly complex RPG this is for you, if you are a fan of the series you’re probably use to this style of play. The storyline is a very good one, but it takes patience, and a bit of lucky to get through the majority of it. This game gets a 7.9 out of 10.

Residents of Sony HOME Disgruntlement Continues

Posted by Altered Confusion on December 29, 2008

So the not so fun experience of Sony PlayStation’s HOME continues. It would appear that there are those who are starting to gather the angry villagers and protest against what Sony has done, again.

This time around it deals with the content filter for text conversations in HOME. To make sure that they covered thier asses a very strict list of words was created that can’t be said in HOME. Now of course they also decided that if the word typed contained the word not to be used that word would also be asterisked out, for example ‘Hello’. The following word contains a not so nice word of h-e-l-l and therefore must be smited from this world. Words also on the list, gay, lesbian, bisexual, Jew, Christ, and others.

Look I might not be the most in the know person out there, but this seems like another cannonball to the ever sinking PlayStation 3 ship. How much more can it take before Sony stops doing bad decisions for their current console, is it going to take the birth of the PlayStation 4 to quiet the storm?

Next up cartoony Avatars for the PlayStation after HOME is scrapped… just kidding.

I would like to say that I know that there are those out there that love the Sony HOME feature that has finally, at long last, appeared on the PlayStation 3, and I have nothing against you, but for me personally the long wait and the disappointment suffered from what I got was enough to tell me I’m never going to think highly of this application.
